Breach List 2008 Q2

The ITRC data breach count has reached an all-time high. Between January 1^st and June 27^th, the total number of data breaches recorded by the ITRC is 342, more than 69% greater than the same time period in 2007. The actual number of breaches is more than likely higher, due to underreporting, and the fact that some of the breaches reported, which affect multiple businesses, are listed as a single event.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) released an important report today discussing the impact of identity theft victimization. Since 2003, the Identity Theft Resource Center has conducted annual victimization surveys to study the impact of identity theft crimes on its victims. Now in its fifth year, the report allows us to analyze the data, draw some conclusions, map trends and identify areas for further research. While ITRC reports the data in terms of percentages, it is critical that we remember those numbers are people. These are people with lives that have been interrupted, altered, torn apart and/or changed.

The Identity Theft Resource Center Reports That Data Breaches More Than Doubled in 2008 First Quarter

The Identity Theft Resource Center launches Breach Response Program.

Data breaches disclosed by Hannaford Bros Supermarket Chain, GE Money, and Georgetown University are just some of the 167 breaches reported during the first quarter of 2008, according to the non-profit Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). This is more than double the first quarter in 2007 (76 breaches).

"Hitman" Scam

According to the San Diego Sheriff Department CATCH Team there has been an email going around from an "unknown" person claiming to be a "hitman" hired to kill the recipiant of the email. This email tries to extord money in exchange for the reader's life. This email is not real. It is part of an on-going phishing scam that targets United States email addresses.
